2009 Umpire Clinic Focuses on Review and Learning The 2009 Umpire Clinic presented by the Don Logana and the Membership Committee for all candidates and probationary umpires emphasized review of NFHS 2-Man Mechanics. The clinic was attended by 18 trainees and 8 mentors and was held at the NSJHS. Trainers Jack Vogler and Ron Cook put the trainees through a 2 hour long clinic in which situational baseball was used to review and reemphasize proper 2-Man mechanics. Jack and Ron were assisted by the North Syracuse Babe Ruth 14 year-old All-star team as they conducted a situational baseball practice preparing themselves for their appearance at the Babe Ruth 14-year Old World Series in Wisconsin. The trainees worked from both the UIC and BASE positions as they reacted to different baseball situations and plays. Immediate feedback was given to the trainees by Jack and Ron. At the end of the situational practice, Mark Grosso, Association Supervisor of Officials and Assigner reviewed assigning concerns and mentioned the need for umpires to work the State Moose Tournament on September 5, 6, and 7. A sign-up sheet was distributed. Anyone interested in working the tournament should contact Mike Capriotti. The last 30 minutes of the clinic was devoted to a Q&A and discussion session. Don Logana, Membership Committee Chair, would like to thank members for their participation, Jack and Ron for their dedication and hard work, and the North Syracuse 14-year Old All-stars and coaches for their participation in the clinic. -Pat Indivero |
