Summer Rule Int Meeting ?????? 2012 Nominations Election of officers will be an agenda item for the 2012 Business Meeting.    The nominating committee consists of John Smorol, Chairman, Chuck Richmond, and Joe Simmons. Those interested in running for office should contact John at smorolj@syrairport.org. Include a synopsis of your qualifications. Feel free to nominate someone other than yourself, but do so with permission of the prospective candidate. The committee should receive information no later than Janurary 3, 2012. According to Article 10, Section 13 of the Chapter’s constitution, nominees must be presented to the membership 14 days before the Annual Business Meeting.   The Annual Business Meeting will be held at Twin Trees Too on February 12, 2012 at noon.   Art Haber Sec-Treas Equipment Dave Prong, from Lester's Upstate Sports will be at our meeting on March 19! Want an equipment list with suggestions updated for 2012?....click here! The state NYSBUA has a proposal in front of them, that will be voted on in the fall of 2012. Charcoal pants and a new pullover could be approved to be implemented in 2013. These motions seem to have wide spread support. Please be aware of this when ordering new apparel for the 2012 season. Despite the threat of rain, we had a very good showing for our second annual picnic. We must have done something right though, the rain did hold off until we were walking to the cars so no one got wet. If by some freak of nature we ever get a real nice day some year, this event could produce some great attendance numbers. In short, I just want to take a min to thank everyone for taking time out of their hectic schedules to join us at the picnic. I know to well how hard it is to get the family together for more than two mins let alone two hours, so please thank your families for me also. My hope is that word will trickle out to those who didn't come to let them know that this is really a nice two hours allowing us to decompress from the past season. My thanks to Jack Root for his expertise in putting this event together, now if he could just control the weather we'd be all set. Art Haber Sec-Treas Tony DeVivo Scholarship Following is the script from the 2011 DeVivo Scholarship Presentation prior to the Chiefs Game at Alliance Stadium, Tuesday July 26. On behalf of the Syracuse Chapter of the NY State Baseball Umpires Association, we are here to honor the winners of the 2nd Annual Tony DeVivo Memorial Scholarship. Along with members of the selection committee, we are especially honored to be joined by members of Tony DeVivo’s family who will present the awards. His wife Betty DeVivo. His daughter Patty DeVivo-Beers and his grandson AJ. A devoted family man and longtime umpire, Tony was a dedicated community leader for youth sports.   He was a Little League President, a CYO Basketball Coach, and one of the Founders of the Moose Baseball Tournament still played today. Tony was a man of action, a leader who rallied others to share in his volunteerism. As a coach, he demanded respect for oneself, teammates, and the game itself. As an umpire, he embodied sportsmanship and fair play. Most of all, Tony had great energy and spirit for giving young people an opportunity to shine. As umpires, we see young ball players who hit homeruns, throw smoke, and make diving stops. Among these athletes, we also meet players who hustle no matter what, run bottle drives, say please and thank you, hand the catcher his helmet, try hard in school, and look you in the eye and smile. The young men we honor tonight have demonstrated the DeVivo spirit. We believe our scholarship is one small way to help them realize part of their dream. Ladies and Gentlemen, here are the winners of the 2011 Tony DeVivo Memorial Scholarship. Brian Burns played baseball at West Genesee High School. He will attend Ithaca College to study Physical Therapy. Andrew Sanders of Auburn High School will also attend Ithaca College where he will major in Business. Evan Terrell of LaFayette High School is on his way to Binghamton University this fall to study bioengineering. Patrick Roberts, from Skaneateles High School will major in engineering at Virginia Tech. As a matter of fact, he is there now attending college orientation and could not be with us this evening.
